Two castles guard the bay at Pylos, and Niokastro is the one at the town - well preserved, with a hexagonal enceinte and a museum.

The town it sits beside
Pylos is small and arcaded, with a shaded square and a waterfront. That is the whole town, and it is the reason the castle is an easy visit rather than an expedition: you walk to it.
What happened offshore
In 1827 a British, French and Russian fleet destroyed the Ottoman and Egyptian fleet in the bay. It was the last major battle fought entirely under sail and effectively secured Greek independence.
Both halves of that are our own guide’s, and the second half is the reason the first matters: a fleet action in this bay is why the country exists in the shape it does.
What else is on this stretch
Voidokilia and the Gialova lagoon, ten minutes north. Voidokilia is the near-circular beach the coast is known for, and the lagoon behind it is a wetland.
Methoni, twenty minutes south. Kalamata, about an hour east.
And inland, Nestor’s Palace - the best-preserved Mycenaean palace in Greece, 17 kilometres north of Pylos, with a legible plan, storerooms and a surviving bathtub, under a modern shelter. It is where Linear B tablets were found that let the script be deciphered.
Practical notes
A car. These are short distances on a quiet coast, but they are distances.
