It is a UNESCO site, half an hour from Delphi, and a great many people driving between Delphi and Athens pass the turning without knowing what is down it.
The two churches
The complex is unusual in having two churches built against each other.
- The Katholikon, the larger, from the early eleventh century, is the one with the mosaics: gold-ground figures on the vaults and squinches, a Washing of the Feet, a Nativity, a Doubting Thomas, and Christ in the narthex. The gold is laid at slightly varying angles so the light moves across it as you do.
- The Church of the Theotokos beside it is older, from the tenth century, with elaborate brickwork on the exterior including decorative Kufic-style patterns.
The crypt
Beneath the Katholikon is a crypt covered in eleventh-century frescoes, low and dim, holding the tomb of the hermit Luke of Steiris after whom the monastery is named. He was not the Evangelist; he was a local holy man whose reputation drew the foundation.
The crypt is easy to miss and is one of the best things there.
Practical notes
- Modest dress is required, as at any working monastery; wraps are usually available.
- Allow an hour and a half, more if the mosaics hold you.
- Light matters. The mosaics are best in bright conditions, when the light comes through the windows onto the gold.
- There is a small shop and a terrace with the valley view.
Where it fits
- Delphi and Arachova are about half an hour north-west.
- Galaxidi is beyond them on the gulf.
- Athens is about two hours east.
The standard use is a stop on the Delphi run, and it deserves more than that.
