Boats squeeze through the entrance one at a time. You can stand on one tower and talk to someone on the other.
The castle
Above the harbour, the castle climbs the hill in five walled enclosures, each with its own gate, and the outer walls run all the way down to the sea to meet the harbour towers. It is one of the most complete Venetian fortification systems in Greece and you can drive or walk to the top.
The view takes in the gulf, the Rio bridge and the Peloponnese opposite.
Lepanto
Nafpaktos is Lepanto, and the naval battle of 1571 was fought in the gulf off this coast: a Holy League fleet against the Ottoman navy, one of the largest galley battles ever fought.
Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote, fought in it and lost the use of his left hand. A statue of him stands by the harbour.
The town and the shore
The town behind is pleasant and ordinary, with squares under plane trees. Either side of the harbour are two pebble beaches, Psani and Gribovo, both with a run of cafes along the front and both used heavily on summer evenings.
Where it fits
- Patras is across the Rio-Antirrio bridge, about half an hour.
- Galaxidi and Delphi are east along the gulf.
- Messolonghi is west.
That road along the north shore of the gulf is one of the better drives in central Greece.
Getting there and how long
About three hours from Athens, or half an hour from Patras over the bridge.
One night, and it pairs naturally with Delphi.
