That difference is the reason to come. Syros has ordinary Greek life going on around you in a way the famous islands mostly no longer do.
Ermoupoli
The town rises from a working port in tiers of neoclassical houses, and its centre is Miaouli Square: a broad marble plaza with the town hall on one side, palm trees, and cafes that fill with locals rather than tour groups.
Behind it is the Apollon Theatre, a small opera house built as a miniature of La Scala, still in use. The town also holds an industrial museum that takes the shipbuilding seriously, because the yards are still there and still working.
The two hills
The skyline is the island’s clearest history lesson. Two hills stand above Ermoupoli, each crowned by a church, and they belong to different faiths.
- Ano Syros, the older, is the Catholic settlement, founded under Venetian rule, a knot of stepped lanes climbing to the cathedral of Saint George. Syros keeps one of the few substantial Catholic populations in Greece, and this is where it lives.
- Vrontado, opposite, is the Orthodox hill, topped by the church of the Resurrection.
Walking up Ano Syros is the best hour on the island: no cars, steps and arches, and the harbour dropping away below.
Beaches
Modest, and that is the point. The coast has sandy bays at Galissas, Kini, Finikas, Megas Gialos and Vari, most with a taverna behind them and none with a beach club. Nobody comes to Syros for the beaches; people who are here find them perfectly good.
Getting there and fitting it in
Syros is a ferry hub with a small airport, and it sits centrally enough that it connects to most of the Cyclades. That makes it a natural first or last stop on a hopping route rather than a destination in itself. Our Greek island ferries guide covers how the routes join up.
Two nights is enough to see the town properly and swim twice. It also works as the calm end of a trip that starts somewhere louder.

Common questions
What is Syros known for?
Being the administrative capital of the Cyclades and the least touristic of the main islands: a neoclassical port city, Ermoupoli, with a working shipyard and an opera house.
Is Syros worth visiting?
Yes if you want a Greek island with ordinary life going on around you. It is a poor choice if you want a whitewashed village and a beach club.
Why is there a Catholic population on Syros?
Ano Syros was founded under Venetian rule and kept its Catholic community, which is why the island has two hilltop churches of different faiths facing each other above the port.
Does Syros have good beaches?
It has decent sandy bays such as Galissas, Kini, Finikas and Vari, with tavernas rather than beach clubs. They are not the reason to come.
How long do you need on Syros?
Two nights covers Ermoupoli, Ano Syros and a couple of swims.
