The second thing is that Greece does not have one sea. A north-facing beach on a windy Cycladic island and a sheltered south-facing bay on Crete are different bodies of water on the same afternoon, and no national average describes both.

Why this page prints no temperatures

We give you the pattern in months and not in degrees, and it is worth explaining why rather than leaving you to wonder.

The body that actually measures this is the Poseidon System, run by HCMR, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. It is a monitoring and forecasting system for the Greek seas, and it publishes satellite sea-surface-temperature maps, buoy and float data, and forecasts of sea temperature, waves and sea level, with anomalies calculated against the historical record. It also maintains monitoring stations sited to catch precisely the regional spread this page describes: one in the North Aegean, one in the Central Cretan Sea, one in the Eastern Ionian.

What Poseidon publishes is today’s conditions and the forecast, not a tidy month-by-month table of normals. The national meteorological service’s climatology pages did not open for us at all. So rather than assemble a monthly table out of whatever a search returns, we print none.

The shape of the sea’s year

The sea is at its coldest in late winter and early spring, in February and March, weeks after the coldest air. A whole winter of cooling and storm mixing has stirred the warmth out of the surface layer by then, and there is nothing left to insulate it.

Through April and May the air turns summery well before the water does, and this is where people get caught. A hot afternoon in May over a sea that has barely begun to recover is the origin of every “I thought Greece was warm” story. June is the month it turns, and it turns late in the month rather than at the start of it.

July and August are hot air over warming water. Then comes the part worth planning around: the sea reaches its warmest in late summer and holds that warmth into September, when the air has already started to drop. September is the month the two curves are best aligned, which is the real argument for shoulder-season travel over and above the thinner crowds. October keeps going in the south long after the north has cooled off.

That is the pattern everywhere in Greece. Where the country splits is in how long each phase lasts, and that is geography rather than calendar. The month-by-month decision, weighing the water against the crowds and the ferries, is the business of the best time to visit Greece.

Greece has several seas

Think of four rough regimes rather than one coastline.

The north Aegean is the cool end. It sits furthest from the warm Levantine water, it takes the full length of the summer north wind, and it comes out of winter coldest. It also warms latest.

The Cyclades, in the central Aegean, are the wind’s corridor. The water here is clear and often startlingly cold for the latitude in late summer, and the reason is mechanical rather than seasonal: a sustained northerly keeps mixing the surface layer and drawing cooler water up from below. The same island can hand you two different swims on two consecutive mornings.

The southern seas, off Crete, Karpathos, Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese, are the warm end and the long season. They come out of winter mildest and they hold their warmth deepest into the autumn, which is why the southern islands are the answer to almost every “can I still swim in October” question.

The Ionian, on the west side, plays by different rules again. It faces Atlantic weather rather than the meltemi, so it is greener, wetter and generally calmer in high summer than the Aegean, and its sheltered east-facing coasts, the ones tucked behind the islands, are among the stillest water in the country.

The meltemi is the variable nobody books around

The meltemi is a dry north wind that blows down the Aegean through the summer and is strongest in the high-summer months. It is the reason the Cyclades feel fresher than their air temperature suggests, and it is the reason ferries get cancelled.

For swimming, what it does is simple to predict and easy to work with. It hits north- and west-facing coasts, and it leaves south- and east-facing bays comparatively sheltered. On a windy island in August, the two sides of the same island are genuinely different days out. A beach with a long open fetch to the north will have chop, blown sand and cooler water; a cove on the lee side will be flat.

This is why “which beach” on a Greek island is a wind question before it is a scenery question. Look at the forecast direction in the morning, then pick the coast facing away from it. Locals do exactly this and it is the single most useful habit to copy.

What the water is actually like to be in

Setting the temperature aside, the Greek sea has a character worth knowing before you meet it.

It is very clear. The Mediterranean is low in nutrients, which is bad for fish and excellent for visibility, and over a sandy or rocky bottom in the Aegean you can commonly see the seabed from the surface at depths that would be opaque in the Atlantic.

It is saltier than the ocean you are probably used to, and you float noticeably higher. It also dries to a visible white film on skin, which is why every serviced beach has a fresh-water shower and why you will want one.

And there is effectively no tide. The Mediterranean’s tidal range is small enough that the waterline you leave your bag above at noon is roughly the waterline at six. That takes away a hazard you may be used to managing, and it takes away the excuse for the bag, so put it further up anyway.

What varies most is the seabed. Sand, coarse pebble, flat rock, and in many places a dark meadow of seagrass a few metres out that looks like dirty water from the shore and is nothing of the sort. That meadow is Posidonia, and it is the reason the water above it is as clear as it is.

The beach is often not sand

A lot of Greek swimming happens off pebbles or off rock, and this catches people who booked a beach holiday.

Pebble beaches are common across the Ionian and on much of the Aegean, and they are the reason the water off them looks the way it does in photographs: pebble does not cloud the way sand does. They are also hard on bare feet on the way in, and hot underfoot at midday. Swim shoes solve both and take up no room, which is why they turn up in what to pack for Greece.

Rock entries, with ladders or cut steps into deep water, are normal on the steeper islands and are how a good deal of the best swimming in Greece is reached. Sand exists in quantity too, particularly on Crete, the Ionian islands and the larger Aegean islands, but it is a feature of specific places rather than a national default. Check what your beach actually is before you plan a day of lying on it.

Wind, currents and the flag on the mast

Now the part that matters most and that we will not soften.

We do not tell anyone that the water anywhere in Greece is fit to swim in on a given day. That judgement is not ours to make and it is not one this site is in a position to issue. What we can do is tell you what is there and who does make it.

Currents in Greece concentrate where you would expect them to: off headlands, in the narrows between islands, at the mouths of channels and where a bay opens to a strait. Open, exposed coasts in a running meltemi produce chop and undertow that a sheltered cove on the same island does not. Wind that pushes you comfortably out from shore is the wind you have to swim back against.

The practical consequence is that most beaches, most of the time, have nobody watching, including many popular ones. Where there is a lifeguard, the flag on the mast is theirs and it is a live instruction rather than decoration: a red flag means entry to the water is prohibited, and two red flags mean it for everyone.

The authority above all of that is the local port authority, the λιμεναρχείο, which is the body that closes water in Greece and the one to ask if you want an answer rather than an opinion.

One more thing worth clearing up, because it is widely misread. A Blue Flag is an award made by the Foundation for Environmental Education against criteria covering water quality, environmental information and education, environmental management, and safety and services. It is assessed for a season, in advance. It says nothing whatever about the wind, the swell or the current on the morning you arrive, and a beach without one is not thereby worse.

What lives in it

Two things you are likely to meet, and neither is a reason to stay out.

Sea urchins sit on rock and in shallow rocky entries, black and spiny and very hard to see against dark stone. Stepping on one is the most common minor injury on a Greek holiday by a wide margin, and swim shoes prevent essentially all of it. Enter rocky water feet first and looking, not by jumping.

Jellyfish turn up in some places in some years, and anyone who tells you which weeks to expect them is guessing. The pattern is patchy and wind-driven: a run of onshore wind can concentrate them in one bay while the next one along has none. Ask locally on the day rather than planning around it. If a beach has a lifeguard, they will know.

How to read a bay in thirty seconds

Before you get in anywhere, four quick reads that cost nothing.

Look at which way the bay faces and which way the wind is coming from, because that decides everything else. Watch the water surface at the mouth of the bay compared with the middle, since a visible line where the chop starts is telling you where the shelter ends. Look for whether anyone else is in, and where, and whether there is a lifeguard. And look at the entry itself: rock, pebble or sand, shallow shelf or immediate drop.

Then make your own call, which is the only place that call can properly be made.

The southern islands extend that window at both ends.

The meltemi. A sustained north wind through the summer keeps mixing the surface layer and drawing cooler water up from below, so the central Aegean runs cooler in late summer than sheltered coasts at the same latitude. Are Greek beaches rough or calm?
